In the Light of the Blackout: Julia Curylo at Porto

The making of porto.art’s first exhibition – a story of darkness, dialogue, and artistic presence

It all began in darkness.

Literally - Julia Curylo's paintings arrived during a regional blackout in Portugal.

In this symbolic atmosphere, we began planning the layout of our first exhibition at Porto.art: envisioning where each work should hang, how they would speak to the space - and to each other.

The artist herself, with full commitment and remarkable sensitivity, guided this process personally. It was no easy task - the paintings are large-format, each one distinct, dynamic, emotionally charged, and thematically demanding. Discussions were long, perspectives varied. We were joined by Grzegorz Gwiazda - one of the world's most renowned figurative sculptors and Julia's husband. Under their thoughtful and artistic gaze, a concept emerged - captivating, full of tension, emotion, and depth.

As Julia Curylo puts it:

"I like it when a painting functions like a question mark - then there's a chance someone will truly ask it."

The first guests will be able to see our collection in mid-June. During the opening week, the artist herself will be present in Porto - an essential part of Porto.art's philosophy. Our mission is not simply to show art, but to create an experience: a personal encounter with the artist, a shared moment of reflection and connection.

After all:

"Art resonates differently when you stand before it with its creator. It's like hearing music live - incomparable."

- Maja Mlodzinska, co-founder and co-owner of Porto.art

Julia Curylo's exhibition opens not only our space, but also a new way of thinking about art - intimate, vibrant, and emotionally alive.

And this is just the beginning.
